Update: Jimmy “The Rev” Sullivan

Posted by Aaron

Here is my latest update and unfortunately, it is one of the saddest moments of my life. On December 28th 2009, the world experienced the death of a living legend. Jimmy “The Rev” Sullivan. The drummer of Avenged Sevenfold. The Rev was a hero of mine and I still am in denial that he is actually gone from this Earth. It feels like a bad dream that I still have not woken up from. To ME, it was the greatest celebrity loss of 2009, including Michael Jackson. Don’t get me wrong, I am a MJ fan and was saddened by his death, but the untimely passing of Jimmy felt A LOT more personal and as a result, was so much more devastating to me. It was so personal because growing up, I was always a fan of rock music and often went through phases saying System Of A Down or Nirvana or so and so was my all-time favorite band, but in 6th grade a friend of mine lent me a burnt CD entitled Sounding The Seventh Trumpet (Avenged Sevenfold’s Debut CD) and said I would like this band, because at the moment I claimed Slipknot and Bad Religion were my favorite bands. I instantly fell in love with the CD, it was the perfect combination of all the bands I listened to and from then on, I listened to it religiously. Everyday after school I had it playing up until 8th grade, that’s when I was watching Warped Wednesdays on FuseTV, and the music video to Bat Country came on. Avenged Sevenfold had a whole new sound and to my amazement, they had finally hit the mainstream. It was one of those weird feelings of proud accomplishment for someone other than yourself, because I had been with this band when no one knew who they were all the way to them on TV for the world to appreciate their music. Avenged Sevenfold was the ONLY band I listened to back in the day before every high school football game, their music was something else to me. Even til today, my gym playlist is 99% Avenged Sevenfold songs. And then, on one of the days I’ll never forget, I received a text from my girlfriend stating “the drummer for avenged died??”. Only to learn that he did in fact pass away, from “Natural Causes” at the age of 28. Avenged Sevenfold is still pretty much the only band I listen to and thankfully I was able to see them live in Los Angeles before The Rev’s death. It’s just a part of life I guess, hopefully Avenged Sevenfold will still make music in memory of The Rev. Rest In Peace Jimmy, you’ve made a difference in my life and others as well.
