Athlete Tests Positive….

Ken Shamrock

I’m talking about steroids of course, not another Magic Johnson situation. In a recent interview, UFC Hall of Famer Ken Shamrock admitted to using anabolic steroids during his MMA career. But this shouldn’t come as a shock to any UFC fan, as Shamrock was grilled for testing positive for 3 different types of steroids in his past. But the thing that made this event article worthy is that Shamrock claimed (and I’m paraphrasing) “It was all for the fans, they want to see bigger and stronger athletes,” a very interesting move as one of the few athletes who spoke his mind about steroid use instead of taking the easy way out and making an insincere public apology like so many caught athletes do. He also claims that fans are too hypocritical, they cheer for steroid users playing on their home team, but once they’re caught, they play dumb and act like they had no idea they were on steroids. Even though Shamrock is trying to justify his use of steroids by blaming it on the fans, I can’t help but somewhat agree with what he’s saying. Yeah, no one forced Shamrock to swallow the pills or shoot the juice, but the fans watch these athletes for entertainment and what’s more entertaining than watching someone perform who is obviously a step above the competition? Some say it’s cheating, but those people don’t realize you still got to work to get to that level, even with steroids. You can’t just get someone of the street, give him ‘roids, and expect him to beat Kobe 1 on 1 or dunk right on LeBron. It’s just not as simple as these anti-steroid fans claim it is, all it’s doing is raising your strength and endurance, you still need talent. But back to Ken Shamrock, the reason for all the steroids was to put on a show, and obviously it worked, he had people watching his fights. The issue of steroids can be argued forever and ever, and it seems like that’s how its going to be for a while. As a lasting thought, here’s a quote from Ken Shamrock when questioned about how easy it is for pro athletes to obtain steroids, “It’s like going to the grocery store. It’s that easy. It’s that simple.”
